George R.R. Martin, author of A Song of Ice and Fire, has opened up on the audience response to the final season of the novel series’ television adaptation, Game of Thrones.

HBO’s Game of Thrones became an instant hit with audiences when its first season was released back in 2011. The fantasy series was the first live-action adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The TV adaptation would eventually outpace the book series, having aired its final season while the final two books are yet to be released.

Unfortunately, the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones received a less than warm response from fans. Many felt that the series had been rushed to an early conclusion in its final six-episode run, without adequate room for certain plot points to develop naturally or for all burning questions to be given a satisfactory answer.

Following the finale, which saw Emilia Clarke’s Daenerys Targaryen take control of the Seven Kingdoms, only to be killed by Kit Harrington’s Jon Snow as he realizes she has become another mad tyrant, many fans took to social media to air their overwhelmingly negative opinions on the episode and season as a whole. Author George R.R. Martin has now spoken out about the response to Game of Throne‘s final season, telling The Independent:

“I don’t understand it, you know. OK, you love a show, you love a character. What’s the worst… it’s either going to be a good show or a bad show or a mediocre show. Some episodes are good, some are bad. Why are people getting so crazy about it, you know? … I don’t understand how people can come to hate so much something that they once loved. If you don’t like a show, don’t watch it! How has everything become so toxic?”

Martin’s confusion is understandable. It is rare to see a show go from such a cultural phenomenon to so universally reviled in the space of just six episodes. It’s unfortunate that Game of Thrones‘ lasting impression was tainted to such an extent in that final season. However, the upcoming spinoff/prequel series, House of the Dragon, may redeem the world of Westeros in fans’ eyes.

Here is the synopsis for the Game of Thrones spinoff series:

Based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood, the series will tell the story of House Targaryen (a.k.a. the House that gave us the Mother of Dragons herself, Daenerys Targaryen) and take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan J. Condal serve as co-showrunners on House of the Dragon and are executive producing alongside George R. R. Martin. The series features a star-studded cast that includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, and Paddy Considine, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno.

All episodes of Game of Thrones are available to stream on HBO Max. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding House of the Dragon and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
