Denzel Washington, Simone Biles, & Civil Rights Organizers Among 17 Individuals Set To Receive Presidential Medal Of Freedom Award
The list of individuals who will receive this years “highest civilian” honor has been released!
According to reports, President Joe Biden will soon personally bestow the esteemed Presidential Medal Of Freedom Award to 17 recipients. The honor is reportedly given to individuals who showcase “meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavors”. This years awardees include Academy award winning actor Denzel Washington, 67, as well as the most over decorated gymnast Simone Biles, 25.
Since coming forward against the late and disgraced former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, Simone Biles has continued to use her platform to advocate for sexual assault victims. The greatest gymnast of all time also regularly advocates for mental health. Simone faced great backlash after pulling out of the 2021 Tokyo Olympics finals, citing mental health reasons.
Multi-talented actor, director, and producer Denzel Washington has also used his massive platform for pure cause. The Equalizer star serves as a national spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, and has for over 25 years.

A White House press release on Biden’s first honoree selection as President, read:
“President Biden has long said that America can be defined by one word: possibilities. These seventeen Americans demonstrate the power of possibilities and embody the soul of the nation — hard work, perseverance, and faith.”
Additionally, the award will be given to several civil rights advocates and organizers. Included, are Fred Gray, one of the first Black members of the Alabama State legislature since Reconstruction; Diane Nash, a civil rights organizer; and Raul Yzaguirre, a civil rights advocate and former US ambassador to the Dominican Republic.
The awards ceremony will reportedly take place at the White House next Thursday, July 7th.
