A sexually transmitted disease (STD), also referred to as sexually transmitted infection (STI), is what the name entails, a disease or infection transmitted through sexual contact. STD testing may give you a better understanding of your sexual health and help in the prevention or treatment of common STDs. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis C, HIV, syphilis, trichomoniasis, and herpes are 7 STDs you can test for right at home.
If you are sexually active, you may be at risk for an STD. For this reason, it’s important to get an STD test regularly, especially if you are experiencing potential symptoms. Although STD symptoms can vary, common ones include:

  • Painful or burning sensation during urination
  • Discolored or abnormally smelling vaginal discharge
  • Discharge from penis
  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding

However, some or all STD symptoms may not be present (such as in the case of asymptomatic infection), so routine STD testing can be helpful. Untreated STIs may put you or your partner(s) at higher risk of HIV, infertility, organ damage, or certain types of cancer, such as cervical cancer. STD testing and treatment are key for protecting your sexual health and that of your sexual partner(s).
