Netflix phased out its five-star rating system several years ago favouring a simple thumbs up, thumbs down recommendation system, but the time has come for an extra thumb. Netflix has announced a new addition that will allow its subscribers to let them know what types of movies and TV series they want to see more of with a two thumbs up rating option called Double Thumbs Up.

Simply choosing whether you like or dislike a movie or TV series is fine, but there’s a big difference between liking and loving something. The two thumbs up system will let subscribers make sure that Netflix knows what they love. Christine Doig-Cardet, Director of Product Innovation at Netflix, said, “That’s why we’re introducing Double Thumbs Up, an additional way for members to let us know what types of series and films you want to see more of. You can find this option next to the Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons on your TV, Web, Android and iOS mobile devices starting today.“ Doig-Cardet continued:

Our current Thumbs Up and Thumbs Down buttons are a good way for you to tell us how you feel about a series or film, and in return, you get a profile that’s better personalized to your taste. However, we’ve learned over time that these feelings can go beyond a simple like or dislike.  Providing an additional way to tell us when you’re really into something means a profile with recommendations that better reflect what you enjoy.

The new rating system will fine-tune your Netflix recommendations even more. “A Thumbs Up still lets us know what you liked, so we use this response to make similar recommendations,” Doig-Cardet said. “But a Double Thumbs Up tells us what you loved and helps us get even more specific with your recommendations. For example, if you loved Bridgerton, you might see even more shows or films starring the cast, or from Shondaland.” Do you think the new Double Thumbs Up system will be more helpful, or do you still miss the old five-star system?
